Take Action

Take Action.

Are you tired of hearing or reading this statement?

I am.

Don’t you think, if I knew what I was supposed to be taking action on, I would be doing it?!!

Wow. If you didn’t hear me yell that, I’d be surprised.

Oh, the problem isn’t that I’m not dedicated, competent, and proficient. It’s not that I am lazy, disinterested, or entitled. Nor is it that I cannot commit, work hard, or follow through till completion. In fact, I am very focused, vigilant, driven, and hard-working – when it comes to doing for or taking care of others.

I falter and feel directionless when I am the focus of the action. I can easily do for others what I seem incapable of doing for myself.

As I processed this thought again, today I substituted the word execute for take action. That seemed to vibrate in me at a higher, positive frequency. This led me to the thesaurus, and I found implement and bring about.

I started this blog because I feel the need to connect compassionately with caregivers and nurturers. To share my story, thoughts, and experiences as I venture onto the unexpected path I find myself walking. It’s a journey into unearthing and embracing who I am. I know I cannot possibly be alone on this journey, and I want to use what is within me to hug and nudge others who are on a similar trek.

This is not an easy path for me. You would think when life has taken a turn, and you find yourself with no responsibilities or obligations (outside of financial) besides what you need and want to do for yourself, you’d be able to jump in and do all the things you once dreamed of doing.

It’s not that simple, particularly for recovering people pleasers and nurturers whose home and careers have been centered on helping and caring for others.

When you’ve nourished and supported the dreams of others, repeatedly setting aside your needs and wants for later, eventually, the quieting of your desires results in silence.

I’ve been living in that silence.

Now, life situations have me where I never anticipated I would be. I can stay in the silence and choose the easy, habitual, and predictable. But, I desire more for myself. So, I’m learning to listen to what is inside me, that which is quietly urging me to bring forth what has been waiting.

And this is where I circle back to frustratedly yelling if I knew what I was supposed to be taking action on, I would be doing it!!

Logically, I know the importance of taking action. I need to take action to move toward my dreams, the unearthing and evolution of Who I Am. But, that phrase has begun to sound and feel like an order, a directive. A negative connotation. That’s a good thing for me to recognize. Instead, at least for now, I will interchange take action with execute, implement, and bring about.

And look at that. I’ve implemented change and feel pleasure in sitting down and writing. Which is, I am well aware, taking action to move me toward my desire to connect compassionately with caregivers and nurturers.

OK, Life, the irony does not escape me; you can stop laughing now.

What will you take action, implement, execute, or bring about today to awaken your desires, your dreams? The important part here, my friend, is awakening your dreams.
