What do you want? Emphasis on you.
Yes, that is a serious question. After you have read this blog, please make the time and effort to think about and honestly answer this question. I even recommend writing your replies because writing helps you process and direct your thoughts and emotions.
You do not need to share your answers or thoughts with anyone unless you choose to. However, I would encourage you to share them with your partner, therapist, or best friend if it will open a more straightforward path in your unearthing journey.
If you’ve been reading my blog, you already know I am not asking for careers, hobbies, vacations, bucket lists, and the like—although you should absolutely write those as well!
I’m asking you to do some shoveling and dig free what you would like for yourself that would help you bring to light – and dare I say to life – the uniquely beautiful person you are.
These are not just words. There is nothing easy about the question.
What do you want?
What do you want to release within yourself, open yourself to, and allow yourself to be?
I’ll be vulnerable and share one of my answers with you.
I want to continue working on being a recovering people-pleaser. This means understanding I was someone, something common in nurturers and caregivers, who rarely voiced or acted on my wants and needs but instead provided for the wants and needs of others. Sometimes, honestly, often, to the detriment of my well-being. I still struggle with this at times, so I intentionally pause and give myself time to consider my replies and decisions if they involve others.
But first, I must know my wants and needs in order to express or act on them.
Digging a little deeper into what I want, I want to unapologetically – key word there – state what I would like. That could be anything from where I would prefer to eat dinner to staying home and reading my book instead of joining a community function others want me to attend or, communicating my boundaries.
To me, and for the message of this blog, the question “What do you want?” has a profound and impactful purpose for our journey toward stating Who I Am.
In essence, knowing what you want is tied to your identity – to who you are. And that, my friend, is the unearthing journey we are on. If you, as I did, reach the point of looking in the mirror and wondering who you are, then answering the question, “What do you want?” will be an essential part of the work you need to do.
It’s all part of discovering the joy in embracing who we are.
A significant starting point, my friend, is answering the question “What do you want?” so you can bring to light – to life – the uniquely beautiful person you are 💙
