Unearth

What word do you use when you learn something about yourself?

Pause here for a moment. Please think on this question.

I realize I’m assuming because you’re reading my blog, you want to or are putting forth thought, time, and effort in some capacity to work on yourself. Hence, my question. What word do you use when you learn something about yourself?

Our words, especially what we use to describe ourselves and our feelings, can be limited by our history, relationships, even childhood. I have no doubt I will have plenty of things to say about feelings in future blogs, but for now, I am specifically focused on when you learn something about yourself.

When you put thought, time, and energy – and I’m going to add money, as well, since I encourage everyone to work with a therapist as they endeavor to transition from asking who am I towards stating Who I Am. There will be ah-ha moments that slip quietly into your awareness and other times as if you were sucker punched. Hopefully, most of the moments are somewhere between these two. However they come about, what word do you use?

I was using the word discover. A lot. However, while I was on my early morning walk recently, the word “unearth” came to mind and hit a beautiful internal chord. I first thought of unearth days before and let it flow right on by. Today, unearth was not going to be ignored. My subconscious has been slipping quietly in, but clearly, it needed to give me a push.

I’m glad I didn’t need a sucker punch. I’ve had a few too many of those in the past few years, thank you very much.

Why unearth? It is a synonym for discover. So, certainly, similar definitions. But, for me, it was more the symbolism, my visualization of the words.

Discover, to me, means finding something new. And, again, to me, unearth means to expose what has been buried or concealed. As I commit time, effort, energy, and money into myself, I slowly but steadily learn things I have kept hidden and buried. I just smiled as I thought, like treasure.

Well, there’s an ah-ha moment for you. How lovely. Aren’t we finding hidden treasure every time we unearth some part of the person we are meant to be?

Whatever word you use, continue learning about yourself. Let the treasure you are shine brightly and bloom brilliantly.
